چکیده
242 words): Putrid food, fetid smells, disfiguring diseases, and a variety of bodily products are disgusting. Incest, bestiality, and many moral transgressions are also disgusting. Does disgust refer to a single emotion, or more than one? Theorists disagree. Many researchers have treated disgust more or less as a homogeneous emotion with a set of prototypical experiential, expressive, physiological, and functional features. Others have proposed two broad clusters of emotional experience, physical disgust and moral disgust, and elicited them using different stimuli. We argue that from an appraisal theory point of view the two kinds of disgust involve different appraisals and thus different experiences, physiologies, action tendencies, and motivations to regulate expression. We hypothesized that physical disgust shares attributes with fear and moral disgust with anger. Using the GRID data, we found that some of the attributes associated with disgust overlapped with those associated with fear, whereas a different set of attributes overlapped with those associated with anger, suggesting two different kinds of disgust, physical and moral. Moral disgust and anger are characterized by a constellation of features— most notably the attribution of agency to another person, the violation of social norms, the presence of value-laden judgments, and the urge to approach and punish. Physical disgust and fear involve no value-laden judgment, but a sense of weakness/submissiveness and an urge to avoid and comply. These finding raise new questions about the role of agency, emotional complexity, and cultural-linguistic variations in the two kinds of disgust.

متن کاملDisgust and the moralization of purity.
Guided by appraisal-based models of the influence of emotion upon judgment, we propose that disgust moralizes--that is, amplifies the moral significance of--protecting the purity of the body and soul. Three studies documented that state and trait disgust, but not other negative emotions, moralize the purity moral domain but not the moral domains of justice or harm/care. In Study 1, integral fee...
متن کاملJust an anger synonym? Moral context influences predictors of disgust word use.
Are verbal reports of disgust in moral situations specific indicators of the concept of disgust, or are they used metaphorically to refer to anger? In this experiment, participants read scenarios describing a violation of a norm either about the use of the body (bodily moral) or about harm and rights (socio-moral). They then expressed disgust and anger on verbal scales, and through facial expre...
متن کاملAliens behaving badly: children's acquisition of novel purity-based morals.
The traditional cognitive developmental perspective on moral acquisition posits that children actively construct moral beliefs by assessing the negative impacts of antisocial behaviors. This account is not easily applied to actions that are considered immoral despite lacking consequences for others' welfare. We studied the moralization of behaviors without tangible impacts, specifically examini...
متن کاملBodily moral disgust: what it is, how it is different from anger, and why it is an unreasoned emotion.
With the recent upswing in research interest on the moral implications of disgust, there has been uncertainty about what kind of situations elicit moral disgust and whether disgust is a rational or irrational player in moral decision making. We first outline the benefits of distinguishing between bodily violations (e.g., sexual taboos, such as pedophilia and incest) and nonbodily violations (e....
